Bauhaus Coding Workshop

The idea for this course came to life in 2020, a few months after my first course Creative Coding Essentials had been released. The feedback for the first course was really good: People reported that they successfully found their way into programming through the course, which made me very happy. Nevertheless I realized that there was still a big problem to solve.

Many students did not know how to use this technical knowledge creatively. Exercises that challenge creativity and thinking tools that explain how to do it were still missing.

When the sharing bauhaus (by Bauhaus Stiftung Dessau) initiative asked me in the summer of 2020 to develop a video tutorial as an individual answer to the question of the future of Bauhaus-education, things immediately came together.

I already had a lot of experience with the design-principles of the Bauhaus, because I had worked as a tutor for a few semesters in the preliminary course at the Münster School Of Design. But with this new task I refreshed my knowledge and read a lot of the new literature that was published due to the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus in 2019.

I came across a few highly interesting books. One described and catalogued the exercises from the preliminary course by Johannes Itten, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers in detail. This led me to the idea to update and adapt these exercises for my own teaching in creative coding. What you find in this course is the result of this process.

Enjoy!
