Kiel Danger Mutschelknaus on building Design Tools with Code
In this interview, I talk to Kiel Danger Mutschelknaus, a motion and generative designer from Maryland with a passion for building design tools with code. Kiel’s journey began while he was teaching at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where his passion for motion design with After Effects led him to explore coding. He started experimenting with replacing graphics and hacking After Effects to push its boundaries. His entry into the world of tool-making was solidified through his work with Processing and ControlP5, which opened up new possibilities for manipulating motion design on the fly.
Kiel’s work revolves around creating generative tools for unique typography, imagery, and motion design. His standout project, the Space Type Generator, is an open-source tool with 16 variations, used worldwide in everything from music videos to murals, and featured in top design publications like It’s Nice That and The Verge. Kiel also collaborates with corporate clients to develop custom graphic and motion design tools. Great stuff! Enjoy the conversation!
